Sparring-Masterclass with Master Hwang Su-il - An unforgettable Weekend in Basel - Switzerland

Master Hwang Su-il Sparring Seminar – Basel, 23-24 November 2024

Last month, members of the Swiss Taekwon-Do Federation had the privilege of hosting an extraordinary seminar led by the renowned Master Hwang Su-il. A multiple-time World and Asian Champion, Master Hwang travelled from Tokyo, Japan, to Basel, Switzerland, to share his expertise. This landmark event attracted participants not only from Switzerland but also from Uzbekistan, Slovenia, France, Germany, and the UK, including masters, instructors, and students of all ages.

Master Hwang was warmly welcomed at Basel Airport and escorted to his hotel to rest after his long journey. His presence marked a momentous occasion, inspiring participants with his skill, knowledge, and passion for Taekwon-Do.

Day 1: Saturday – A Day for All Ages

The seminar kicked off on Saturday morning in a spacious sports hall with over 80 participants in attendance. The session was especially inclusive, with a dedicated segment for children under 10 years old. This gave young students a chance to experience the larger Taekwon-Do community beyond their regular classes. Parents observed how Taekwon-Do nurtures growth from children to black belts, showcasing skills and discipline at every level.

Despite the language barrier, with the seminar conducted in English, Miss Melanie Muntwyler (2nd Dan) provided seamless translation, allowing all attendees to fully engage. The children, showing remarkable focus and discipline, eagerly participated in a dynamic session that began with an intense warm-up and stretching routine.

Master Hwang emphasized the importance of posture and foot movement, demonstrating his incredible speed and precision. His smooth and fluid techniques inspired awe, while he stressed that mastering such skills requires relentless practice. Flexibility, strength, and speed were recurring themes, encouraging participants to dedicate themselves to continuous improvement.

Day 2: Sunday – Building on the Foundation

Sunday’s session built on the techniques introduced on Saturday, with over 60 participants returning, motivated and eager despite the physical toll of the previous day. Master Hwang expanded on movement skills, spinning and jumping kicks, and the nuances of sparring. His teaching style, marked by humility, empathy, and attention to detail, reinforced his reputation as a world-class master and instructor.

Congratulations and Special Thanks

Gratitude to Master Hwang Su-il

Our heartfelt thanks go to Master Hwang Su-il for taking time away from his family and school in Japan to share his knowledge with us. His presence enriched the understanding and skills of our Swiss members and practitioners from across Europe.

This seminar was a resounding success, thanks to the efforts of all participants, the dedication of parents who observed patiently, and the commitment of those who made the event possible.

Taekwon!
